Mr. Simon Chapple


The Internet of Things


In his presentation, Simon will give an overview of the University’s IoT Research and Innovation Service and our plans for wider rollout across the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region. He will describe a number of the IoT projects ongoing at the University of Edinburgh including our Smart Campus development. He will also give a vision of an IoT enabled future and how IoT can be utilised in Industry 4.0.


Simon leads the IoT Research & Innovation Service at the University of Edinburgh, a component of the World Class Data Infrastructure underpinning its Data Driven Innovation programme for the Edinburgh and South East Scotland City Region Deal.

Simon is a long term data technologist having developed HPC data analytics software and mobile device applications targeting a variety of industries from telecoms, retail, banking to healthcare in a varied career over the last 30 years.

Simon’s areas of interest are diverse and include: the ethical and privacy preserving implementation of computing-based solutions, developing an IoT enabled Smart Campus, bringing IoT into the school curriculum through connected STEM, soundscape analysis, immersive reality, civic robotics, data visualisation and graph databases.
